Hello to all my brothers from 1/3. I would like to express my appreciation for the trust you have placed in me as President for the coming year. I will do all that I can to earn that trust. Also, I am the current Chairman of the Membership Committee for 3rd Marine Division. I will be making a yeoman's effort to try and engage as many 3rd Marine Division Marines to join and participate in the organization as I can. Currently, Doc James is assisting me and we would appreciate any volunteers who may be willing to assist in mass emailings and the like. Also, as I stated at the recent 1/3 reunion meeting, we will be sending out emails to everyone with a sinple single color attachment. We would like you to print this off and drop them off in any area that Marines may congregate (VFW, VA, DAV, American Legion, Marine Corps League). It is not a daunting task and if everyone can deliver two or three, I hope we will have a marked increase in 3rd Marine Division memberships. Please visit this web site frequently to look for more announcements and the status of these programs. Thanks and Semper Fi! Dick

Hello Everyone, I'm the Web Master, and just wanted to THANK all those that attended the REUNION in Louisville, KY between August 9th and 14th. For those that didn't make it, YOU missed a Great Time. At OUR Mini Reunion, we were honored to have Dr Donald F. Teal, the former Chief Naval Medical Officer aboard the USS Okinawa, during the 1st Battalion 3rd Marines time assigned to SLF-A from April 1967 to Jan 1968. Dr Teal, had taken 8mm pictures of the start of Operation BEAU CHARGER, May 18, 1967 from the Ship's Bridge. It shows B-1-3 Marines loading onto the CH-34 Helicopters on the Flight Deck, going to War. Then Helicopters returning with wounded, and taking more Marines ashore. He also shows the Hospital area aboard the USS Okinawa, which he set up. Along with the Operation pictures, he has a section on Casualty Care, and a Medical Civil action south of Da Nang. The CD is available here at the Our Web Site. For a Donation of $25.00 and $5.00 postage ($30.00 total each), you can get your own copy. IT will have more meaning to the Marines and Corpsmen from 1st Bn 3rd Marines that were in the SLF-A Operations. The Reunion next year is scheduled to be held in Aug 2012 in San Diego, CA. More info to follow, but start planning and saving for it! Semper Fi, Don "BUM" Bumgarner C-1-3 67-68 IF you want a Dr Teal CD, contact me!

While helping a friend clean out her parents house, both parents are now gone, I found an annual, a high school yearbook if you will. The preface is dated 14 August 1970, written by the outgoing commander, Lieutnant Colonel D.J. Hunter. On the next page incoming commander, Lt. Colonel H.W. Wahlfeld says how he looks forward to a "long and beneficial tour as your new commanding officer." After that this book literally looks like a high school yearbook with pictures of everyone in each section of the unit. S-1, lead by Captains W.A. Holt and T.D. Weiner. Chaplain W.B. Turner. H&S Company led by Captain J.R. Trautwein and 1st Lt. M.G. Roth. Battalion Aid with Lt.MC-USN G.K. Roduner and HMC P.M. Versage. The list goes on and on. If any of you that know someone or served with the 1/3 in 1970 would like to have this book let me know via email. I was a shallow water sailor back then, and have memories of my own, but this book is to important to any vet to toss into the trash. If I get no replys, fine. I'll keep it, look through it from time to time, and remember what all of us have spent out lives forgetting. Semper Paratus, Always Ready.

If anyone can remember sometime in eiither May/June65, outside of DaNang, a small village was hit by unknown Arty(WP), not far from where my Plt was. They brought two twin babies over to the Plt, both wer badly burned with WP. I was the only Corpsman with this Plt, as I was a replacement up from ChuLai. These kids were treated and I had them Evac'd by Helo to C-Med. If any of you Marines remember this event please, give me a sitrap. I can't remember the PltLt or the Company. I served from the Fall of 67 to March 68. We moved around and in Dec 67 was up at Con Thien. Anyone remember when Doc Howard got killed on Dec !0th. In Jan or Feb of 68, I had an incident in my squad where a new Marine wnt to the Corpsman for some aspirn. He returned but when I later checked on him, he was dead. I started giving him mouth to mouth and finally brought him back. They called in a Medivac and he returned in two days. To our astonishment, he had an allergic reaction to aspirn that caused his lungs to collapse. His nickname was Chief but I am trying to find out if he ever made it home. My email is garcherwsr@truvista.net. Its over 40 years and I still think about this guy. Let me know. Thanks. Bill Garcher 1905 Shangrila Drive Winnsboro, SC 29180 803-482-4805

I was in the first wave on Iwo Jima with the 4th Marine Division on Feb. i9th.!946 and was shot in the left arm with Jap machine gun in two places and through the tip of my left middle finger. I was ordered to return to the shore -about 2 miles- and was treated there, evacuated to guam via Johnson Island, fed lunch there and then flown to Pearl Harbor where we spent 4 days and then transferred to the 4th Division on Maui where we were gotten ready to be sent to the Phillipines and the war was declared ended and then we were sent to Okinawa for about 9 months to get ready to attack Japan and Peace was declared, and I then was transferred to Maui, our home base at the time. I received the Purple Heart a fewweeks later for my Wounds. After return to he States I went to medical school a U. of Va.in 1951

To the officers and men of the First Battalion, Third Marines: This is a tribute to a fine fighting organization. Every member of the Batalion took pride in his contribution to its accomplishments and expoits. Throughout our Viet Nam tour with the Third Marine Division, our performance was characterized by our high order of teamwork, dedication and professional skills. During our final six months in Viet Nam we set the standard for the defense of Da Nang airfield; we pioneered the campaing of aggressive combat patrolling against the Viet Cong;oou civic action efforts on behalf of the Vietnamese people were of lasting significance; and above all, we established a hard won reputation for combat efficiency and fighting spirit that was equalled by few and excelled by none. It was a pleasure and a privilege to serve with you. My best wishes for the future for all that are here, and all who has gone

HEY JARHEADS. GREAT CITE. JUST FOUND IT. ANYBODY REMEMBER WHEN THE AMMO DUMP BLEW IN APRIL OF 69? I WAS AT THE CHECKSTAND THAT MORNING WHEN THE VIETNAMESE WERE BURNING TRASH ACROSS THE ROAD NEAR THE AIR FORCE BOMB DUMP-THE 366TH MUNITIONS GROUP. SPARKS AND BURNING GRASS WERE BLOWING ACROSS THE ROAD TOWARD OUR GRADE 3 STORAGE AREA, WHEN GRASS AND A STACK OF 4 DUCE WHITE PHOSPOROS ROUNDS CAUGHT FIRE. SOME GUYS TRIED TO BUST IT UP AND DROP THE SMOKERS IN WATER BARRELLS BUT THINGS HAPPENED TOO FAST. YOU ALL KNOW THE REST. DETAILS WERE NEVER TOLD TO US, BUT IN SHORT,THAT WAS ALL SHE WROTE FOR ASP-1. WE WERE TOLD THAT THE ONLY CASUALITIES WERE SOME GUYS WHO WERE KNOCKED OUT OF THE GUARD TOWERS. THANKS TO THE GREAT CG UPSTAIRS FOR THAT! FOUND a black denim motorcycle vest with various Vietnam Vet patches. Found Sept. 18th at 10 a.m. It was found on 441 South between Franklin NC and Sylva NC. The vest is black denim, size Large. It has the following patches on it: Vietnam Vets, 3rd Marine Division, First Battalion, Tu Than 235, Harley patches and a couple of more Vet patches. There was a pack of Winston cigarettes in the pocket with a Florida tax stamp on it. There was also a waterproof sunscreen packet in the pocket. It had to have been dropped between about 8 and 10 am. It had been raining but the vest was dry so that narrows the time down. If anyone out there lost this vest or might know who did please contact me at my email address, vetski@aol.com. Thanks Yvette

The first battalion scout radar operators. A ground sonar probably rejected by the Army was to be able to "hear" the enemy approaching for miles away. I rotated out in November 1964 & went to Quantico for the rest of my hitch. Felt guilty for a long time that I did not get to Vietnam with my unit. My brother, Jim, served 2 tours in Nam.

Hello Everyone, this is the Web Master again. Recently GySgt Eric N Johnson, Director of the "School of Infantry West-Hawaii Det" SENT a Request for anyone that might want to DONATE any type of WAR Memorabilia to SHARE with his Classes. He had requested from VFW or any Organization ANYTHING to Help! Think about it! ***********************Subject: School of Infantry Hawaii Support To whom it may concern: I am the Director for the newly formed School of Infantry West, Detachment Hawaii. I am looking for support to build a museum type lounge area in our school house to motivate and inspire our students and staff. I would also like to use the VFW as a resource for guest speakers and lecturers for our school house. We are currently running the Marine Corps Infantry Squad Leaders Course, Sniper School, and the Martial Arts Instructors Course. We have students that attend from the Marines, the Army, and the Navy. I am looking for any type of war memorabilia from any conflict. An old uniform or knife will serve a better purpose in a shadow box on our walls than in trunk in an attic. I appreciate any support that your organization can offer us. Respectfully GySgt Eric N. Johnson Director School Of Infantry West-Hawaii Det Office: 808-257-1762 Cell: 808-927-6643 ********************************* I had writen back to GySgt Johnson, that I would PASS the Word, and he sent back this message: Thanks a lot. Feel free to give my info to anyone that may wish to make a donation, or anyone heading out to Hawaii that may want a tour of the base and school. GySgt Eric N. Johnson Director School Of Infantry West-Hawaii Det Office: 808-257-1762 Cell: 808-927-6643 ************************* If you might want to email GySgt Johnson his email is: eric.n.johnson@usmc.mil , so if you might have something that You Can SHARE, please contact GySgt Johnson. *************** Thanks Don BUM C/1/3 67-68

If anyone was on LZ Kevin May 22, 1969 and remember Paul Speaks and Ralford Jackson being killed by a direct hit in their hole, I would like to get in touch with someone in Paul Speaks family. He listed Newark, OH as his home of record. I was watching the HBO movie "Taking Chance" the other night and decided I had waited long enough to try to contact the families of these two Marines. I spoke with Ralford Jackson's mother the other day and it was some experience. I told her Ralford did not suffer because they never knew what hit them. Their hole was about six feet away from my hole. When they were hit some of jumped up and wrapped them in ponchos and took them up to the LZ so they could be extracted when the shelling was over. While we were gone, our hole took a direct hit and all our gear was blown to bits. My personal stuff, letters, weapon and everything was gone. Speaks and Jackson dying saved my life. I told Ralford Jackson's mother abut this and she was glad to know how her son died. She asked me to stay in touch. She lives near Tuba City, AZ. I still have not been able to contact any of Paul Speaks family yet. If anyone can help please let me know. Thanks and Semper Fi.

I was the one four man in Alpha Company for most of my tour in Vietnam from May 1968 to May 1969. Occasionally I rotated to H & S company and near the end of my tour I was the one four man for Charlie Company when we went into the A Shau Valley. I've written a book called "One Four Man Up" which is now available for ordering (signed copy) on my website, http://www.onefourmanup.com . The book is being published by Infinity Publishing and I should have copies ready for shipment around March 15, 2009. The book tells the story of why I joined the Marines in 1966, the training I went through and the many experiences of my tour in Vietnam. But it doesn't end there. I saw horrific things (as we all did) which resulted in PTSD that lasted for 20 years. The PTSD had a profound effect on my life as told by my story. Finally, after 20 years, I came full circle and an event occurred which finally put an end to the war I was fighting inside and the healing began. It took another 20 years for me to bring my story to print and I hope some of you will be interested in reading my book. I now own my own business called Lauck Street Shipyard Corporation. I design and produce my own line of model ship kits specializing in 18th century period ships. I have a website for my business at http://www.lauckstreetshipyard.com . Building model ships helped me in dealing with my PTSD. I'm also trying to identify a buddy I lost in September 1968 on Mutter's Ridge. I only knew him as "Terry" and he was the Alpha Company radio operator. He was killed by 50 cal machine gun fire and his death still haunts me today because I don't know his real name. I have searched the Wall and the chronologies and can find no trace of a "Terry" who died from 1/3 in September 1968. If anyone knew Terry and can tell me his name, I would love to hear from you. Thanks to all 1/3 Marines serving today. Your service will always be remembered. Take care, Bob Hunt

Hello Guys, With the sudden passing on Dec 27th, 2008 of C/1/3 Vietnam Marine FREDDY PERKINS, from Cancer in Cottage Grove, Oregon, Fred's wife SANDY says "THANKS" for the Cards and Support! She says, that a Celebration of Life for Fred was held on Jan 4th, 2009 (Sunday) at the Cottage Grove High School. She stated: "Just a note to say thank you for your kindness and caring in the loss of Fred. The memorial service was just amazing, a wonderful tribute to Fred. He had a military service, plus the Patriot Guard honored him with flags and stood watch over the service. It was truly incredible and more than 400 people came to give tribute to their fellow friend, relative, classmate and Marine. Again, thank you and Semper Fi. Sandy, David, Tom, Dylan and Morgan Perkins" Just wanted to let everyone know that Freddy is Guarding the Gates of Heaven, and said "SEMPER FIDELIS" one last time! RIP Freddy!

Semper Fi to those brave men I had the honor to serve and fight beside: Neiderberger,VanDorn, Hodgeman,Inman,Burgoon (KIA) and all the others.I was hit 1/4 inch below the heart by sniper fire on 16 Sept. 1967 in Quang Tin and I'm still trying to locate "Doc Mac" to thank him for saving my life. His last name was McDonnah and I may be incorrect on the spelling. After many months of recovery in various hospitals, I was medically discharged from the Corps but I'll always remember the brave young warriors that served their time in hell and God rest Burgoon's soul in eternal peace.

Hello from Da Nang Vietnam. This is your old web master and chapter president, Bill Ervin. If you haven't already heard, I am living in Vietnam now and working as an English teacher. The place has changed a bit since most of you were here last. If you're curious about what it's like today, check out my web site at www.billinnam.com and if you've ever thought about coming over, give me a shout and I will see if I can help you make it a trip to remember. And if you already have a gig going, I'd still love to see you in Da Nang as you pass through. If you not active with the Chapter, get involved. It's still a great group of men.

Hello GUYS! Hope you can assist the Daughter of a Former C/1/3 Marine, if you REMEMBER her Dad(L/Cpl James Louis TUBBS, Jr.). James L. TUBBS, Jr ----SILVER STAR Award For Action January 22, 1968 North of C-4 DO YOU REMEMBER: Cpl JAMES LOUIS TUBBS Jr., from Paducah, KY. On January 22, 1968 he was L/Cpl TUBBS, with 1st Platoon, Company “C”, 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines. He was the point man (he had volunteered to be Point) for a Squad moving across a 100 meter wide open area of flat sand between two Tree lines approx 3000 meters north of the Dyemarker position C-4 (known as Little View). L/Cpl Tubbs with L/Cpl Ted B. MICHAELS crossed under the cover of a smoke screen provided by 3.5” Rocket White Phosphorous rounds. As they dashed across the Open Area towards the Dunes on the other side, they reached the top of the dune, and Tubbs saw a North Vietnamese behind an automatic weapon on bipods. He shouted to Michaels who ducked and then shot the gunner who fell over his weapon. At the same time another of the enemy fired at Michaels with a M-16, Tubbs shot him when the enemy stuck his head up and tried running down the beach when he heard a hiss followed by an explosion. He fired twice at the RPG man on the inboard slope of the dune hitting him a second time and causing him to fall into his hole and the rocket which was ready to be fired to be shot into a nearby tree, Tubbs then threw a Grenade into the hole. Tubbs offered to advance further beyond the dune’s crest alone, but was denied. He did provide cover for other Marines to assisit L/Cpl Michaels who was in Shell Shock from close Chicom explosions, back across the open area to the southern side of Little View. He exposed himself and disregarded his safety, as he covered the other Marines, and was the last to cross back to the southern side. He had three of the KILLS, of the 8 NVA killed that day with out losing any Marines. This is basically the letter written by 2nd LT Kevin A CAHALAN, who witnessed the actions of L/Cpl Tubbs. Jerry Willis had recently received a email from Winona Vaughn of Henderson, KY., who said she was the Daughter of “James L. Tubbs, Jr.” and wanted to know how to possibly find Marines that knew her DAD. Jerry told me about Winona, and I did contact her. She said she had found the information about a REUNION for 1st Battalion 3rd Marines, and sent Jerry the email. She indicated her Dad had married her Mom, in 1971, and she was born in 1972. She said her Dad, didn’t talk much about Vietnam, and had a Bulldog USMC Tattoo on his bicep. She said her Dad had problems and a ruff marriage, and did end his life in Suicide, when she was 13 years old. She said her Dad was nicknamed “DUNNIE” by a lot of people, but didn’t know if it was from Vietnam or not. She said he was really thin, dark hair, and green eyes, but doesn’t know if that helps. She said after her grandmother(her Dad’s Mom) passed in 2003, she found papers about him and the Silver Star Award he had received for Heroism in Vietnam. With her own son, who is 16 and resembles her Dad, and her 4 year old daughter, that reminds her of herself when she was younger, she wants to find more about her Dad and his time in Vietnam for them. She did send the request for the Silver Star to Records in St Louis, and did receive his Medal and Citation, in January, 2004. She thinks he also had a Purple Heart too. She says her Dad enlisted in 1966, when he was 17 years old, and went through Boot Camp at Paris Island. With her curiosity high, she HOPES to find Someone that Remembers her Dad. The original Award Recommendation by Captain W. OSGOOD, Company Commander for “C” Company was sent to the Secretary of the Navy, on June 25th, 1968 for the “NAVY CROSS”. S/Sgt James J. HERBERT and 2ndLt Kevin A. CAHALAN were eyewitnesses to the Actions of L/Cpl James L. TUBBS, Jr. on January 22, 1968 north of C-4. Commanding Officer at 1st Bn, 3rd Marines, sent the request forward, recommending the “SILVER STAR”, on 30AUG68. The Commander in Chief U.S. Pacific Fleet approved and forwarded the “SILVER STAR” request, 12NOV68. Cpl James L. Tubbs, was presented the SILVER STAR at Camp Lejeune, on 16Jul69. The Citation reads: The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the SILVER STAR MEDAL to: CORPORAL JAMES L. TUBBS,JR. UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS, for service as set forth in the following CITATION: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Rifleman with Company C, First Battalion, Third Marines, Third Marine Division, in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 22 January 1968, during a patrol near an outpost north of the Cua Viet River, Corporal Tubbs volunteered to serve as point man for a squad assigned to move across a large open area to reconnoiter a tree line. As the Marines neared the objective, they suddenly came under intense automatic weapons and small-arms fire. Alertly observing a North Vietnamese soldier preparing to direct machine-gun fire at a friendly position Corporal Tubbs killed him with an accurate burst of rifle fire. During the ensuing fire fight, he repeatedly disregarded his own safety to locate and destroy hostile positions. On one occasion, he threw a hand grenade directly into an enemy bunker, effectively silencing the hostile fire from the emplacement. When a Marine was rendered unconscious by an exploding grenade, Corporal Tubbs aggressively moved forward and pinned down the enemy with accurate fire, killing two more hostile soldiers, while several Marines advanced and evacuated the wounded man. As his squad withdrew across 100 meters of open terrain, Corporal Tubbs continuously exposed himself to enemy fire in order to provide effective covering fire for his companions. His heroic actions were instrumental in saving the life of a fellow Marine and his unit accounting for eight North Vietnamese soldiers killed. By his extraordinary courage, bold initiative, and selfless devotion to duty at great personal risk, Corporal Tubbs upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. For the President, signed by L.F. CHAPMAN, JR., Commandant of the Marine Corps Jerry and I were talking, and WE don’t REMEMBER any of these names, other than Capt OSGOOD. I REMEMBER the AMBUSH of 2nd Platoon on January 19th, north of C-4 and the Re-Action Force with Amtracs, and Our 3-KIA(Benedict, Burgoon, and Morris) and 33-WIA’s. DO ANY of YOU, Remember possibly 1st Platoon members, L/Cpl Ted B. MICHAELS, S/Sgt James J. HEBERT, or 2ndLt Kevin A. CAHALAN? If you Remember them, maybe you REMEMBER L/Cpl James L. TUBBS,Jr. Do you REMEMBER the action at Little View on 22Jan68, where L/Cpl TUBBS was recommended for the NAVY CROSS/Awarded the SILVER STAR? After we left C-4, and went to Quang Tri and the Battalion Rear area, I was SHORT, but I don’t REMEMBER hearing about the Activity on the 22Jan68, or the Pending Medal for BRAVERY for L/Cpl James L. Tubbs. I rotated Home in Mid March 1968, and just recently heard about it from Winona VAUGHN (Daughter of James L. Tubbs Jr.). If you REMEMBER L/Cpl Tubbs, I HOPE you will contact his Daughter (Winona Vaughn). She can be contacted at email address: winonavaughn@bellsouth.net ! I know some of you MUST REMEMBER L/Cpl Tubbs, and possibly about his Silver Star. Semper Fi, Don Bumgarner C/1/3 67-68 60mm Mortars

Hello ALL, This is your Web Master again, and just wanted to let EVERYONE know what I have been doing lately. I recently finished updating the Company Lists with the Names and Addresses of many additional MARINES from 1st Battalion / 3rd Marines. These NEW Names are mainly from the Membership Directory for the Third Marine Division Association for 2008. Maybe some of these New Names are NOT on the Computer, but would ENJOY hearing via "LETTER" from a Old Buddy. I know , before I was on the Computer, I did LOCATE about 5-6 guys from Vietnam via the old Letter Method. I feel, the MORE names we have listed the BETTER for the web site and the Battalion. MORE and MORE of the Battalion Members are STARTING to LOOK for those MARINES and CORPSMEN, WHO they SHARED their TIME in Vietnam, WWII, Korea, or one of the more recent Wars on Terror. For US VIETNAM Vets, 40 plus years and counting, SO NOW is the TIME to Reconnect with OUR FRIENDS from the PAST! CHECK OUT Your Company List, you might find someone you have been LOOKING FOR. If you NOTICE that a Battalion Member you know, is not there, Encourage them to "Muster In". I am STILL LOOKING for James P BRADFORD(former California Marine, but possibly from Arizona/New Mexico area now) or Jack MILLIGAN(last know from MICHIGAN). If you know Bradford or Milligan, let me know. OUR Web Site is a for ALL of US, and HOPE you like it. Stand At Ease, and Take Care! Till NEXT Time, Semper Fi Don B C/1/3 67-68 Web Master!

Wonderful web site. Thank you for the recognition of A Company and the "water run" ambush in 1967. While I was safely at sea, one of my best friends, Corporal Bill Urick, was KIA in that fight. He was a great guy. God bless all who served.

I wanted to let the membership know that Don Baumgarner has been appointed to the position of VP effective immediately to fill the term voluntarily vacated by Dave Daniel. Don will serve out the entire current term. In addition to all of the many things he does on behalf of our organization on a daily basis he wanted to step up and do even more! I hope I can fulfill his wish!! Thanks Don!!! And see you all in San Diego!!!! Semper Fi

My father Carmin Saccardi Sr. went to OCS after Camp in N.C. I know he fought in Bogainville and Guam. Discharged a Captain he went on to work for Merrill Lynch for 28 years until his death in 1975. I am trying to acquire as much info as possible. God bless all our service men and women and the 3rd Marines.
